Call for Workshops

The SOPHIA Board would like to invite proposals for workshops and papers for the next SOPHIA Network Meeting. As discussed last year the Board decided to move the Network meeting from November to May, and a call was put out for institutions to host the meeting in 2014 or 2015.

A joint proposal was put forward by Petit Philosophy, The Plato Society of Zagreb and the Institute of Philosophy, Croatia, for a meeting to be held in May 2014, which was accepted by the Board.

The meeting is to be held in Zagreb starting on the evening of Thursday 8th May and finishing Sunday 11th May.

On Friday 9th May the organising committee have arranged for us to run English speaking workshops in a local school – so please make it clear if you have a preference for running your workshop in school. We cannot guarantee that you will get your preference, but it is useful to know when timetabling the workshops.

The meeting will close on Sunday 11th May – we are thinking at the moment that the 11th will include social and cultural activities in Zagreb.

The theme for this years meeting is ‘Ways into Philosophy’.

The Board are asking for workshops or papers to show how to engage people with or in philosophy – and we welcome as many different ways as possible. It could be mode of presentation, or the way that the philosophy is done, or even showing ways in which you use philosophy in other lessons (linking it to curriculum subjects e.g. maths, science). The main question we are considering is ‘how do you make philosophy accessible to young people?’

We are keen to encourage workshops that are interactive and that will give members something to ‘take-away’ from the weekend. However, papers are also welcome, but we will aim to keep these to a minimum.

Please send your proposal to the following Board Members:

Peter Worley <peter@philosophy-foundation.org>
Ed Weijers <ed@kinderfilosofie.nl>
Bruno Curko <mala.filozofija@gmail.com>
Emma Worley <emma@philosophy-foundation.org>

Please include in your proposal:

* Your name and a short biography (200 words max)
* If you are part of an organisation we will need a description of the organisation you represent.
* A workshop / paper title
* Details of the proposed workshop / paper (including how long) & how it fits into the Network Meeting theme

Please note that we look to run most workshops for an hour to 90 minutes.

The closing date for workshops / papers is 31st March 2014.
